4-Day Turkmenistan Tour: Merv, Ashgabat & Darvaza Gas Crater
Cross into Turkmenistan from Uzbekistan at the Farab border and journey through the country's greatest highlights in four days. Explore the ancient Silk Road ruins of Merv, marvel at the gleaming white-marble capital of Ashgabat with its museums and the Parthian site of Nisa, then head deep into the Karakum desert to spend a night beside the blazing Darvaza Gas Crater. The route ends at the Shavat border, offering a compact yet rich taste of Turkmenistan's history, culture, and desert wonders.
DAY BY DAY
Day 1 — Farab Border – Merv – Mary
Your journey begins by crossing the border from Uzbekistan at the Farab checkpoint. After border formalities, you head to the ancient ruins of Merv, one of the greatest cities of the Silk Road and a major site of the Persian and Islamic periods. You explore Merv's main monuments, including the Gyz Gala fortress, the Askhab mausoleums, the ancient citadels of Gyaur Kala and Erk Kala, and the magnificent Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, once the tallest structure of its age. After this rich day of exploration, you check into your hotel in Mary, the regional capital near the ruins of Merv, where you spend the night.
Day 2 — Mary – Ashgabat
After breakfast you set off for Ashgabat (388 km, about a 4-hour drive) along an excellent, well-maintained toll highway. In the afternoon you begin a comprehensive tour of Ashgabat, one of the world's most unusual cities and holder of a Guinness World Record for the highest concentration of white-marble buildings. You visit all the major sights, including the National Museum, the Carpet Museum, various monuments, the ruins of Nisa (the first capital of the Parthian Empire), and the renowned Akhal-Teke horse farm. Overnight at a hotel in Ashgabat.
Day 3 — Ashgabat – Darvaza Gas Crater
Enjoy free time in Ashgabat in the morning for leisure or further sightseeing. In the afternoon you set out for the Darvaza Gas Crater (271 km, about a 4.5-hour drive), bearing in mind that road conditions are challenging. On arrival at the crater, known as the "Door to Hell", you have time to explore this extraordinary natural phenomenon. Dinner is served at a nearby yurt camp for an authentic desert experience, followed by an overnight stay at Darvaza in traditional yurts or tents.
Day 4 — Darvaza – Dashoguz – Shavat Border
After breakfast at Darvaza you continue toward Dashoguz (300 km, about a 7-hour drive); be prepared for very challenging road conditions. On arrival in Dashoguz you spend some time exploring the city before crossing into Uzbekistan through the Shavat border crossing. This marks the end of the tour.
