3-Day Turkmenistan Tour: Shavat Border – Darvaza – Ashgabat
This three-day Turkmenistan tour blends history, culture and desert adventure into one unforgettable journey. Starting at the Shavat border near Khiva, you cross into Turkmenistan, pass through Dashoguz, and drive deep into the Karakum Desert to the famous Darvaza Gas Crater, the glowing "Gates of Hell." After a magical night beside the burning crater in a traditional yurt camp, you continue to the white-marble capital Ashgabat for a full city tour before departing. It is the perfect short trip to combine the desert's wild wonder with Turkmenistan's most remarkable sights.

DAY BY DAY
Day 1 — Shavat Border → Dashoguz → Darvaza Gas Crater (overnight)
We meet you at the Shavat border crossing near Khiva in Uzbekistan and, after completing all border formalities, transfer to Dashoguz for lunch at a local restaurant with regional cuisine. In the afternoon you begin the exciting drive to the world-renowned Darvaza Gas Crater (about 300 km, roughly 7 hours across the Karakum Desert). On arrival you have ample free time to watch the breathtaking burning crater at dusk, followed by a traditional dinner of beef, chicken or vegetable kebabs at a nearby yurt camp just 400 meters away. Your guide shares the legends of Darvaza as you spend an unforgettable night under the desert sky in comfortable yurts or tents.
Day 2 — Darvaza → Karakum Desert craters → Ashgabat
After breakfast at Darvaza, we drive on through the vast Karakum Desert toward Ashgabat (271 km, about 4.5 hours), stopping along the way to explore the unique Water and Mud craters and a charming desert village where locals raise goats and camels. After lunch in Ashgabat you enjoy a comprehensive city tour of the capital, famous in the Guinness Book of Records for its white-marble buildings, including the National Museum of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen Carpet Museum, the Neutrality Arch, the Independence Monument, the Ertugrul Gazi Mosque, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nisa, the Akhal-Teke horse stables and the Ashgabat Olympic City. Enjoy dinner with authentic local flavors and overnight in Ashgabat.
Day 3 — Ashgabat sightseeing, shopping & departure
After breakfast this flexible day is tailored to your interests in Ashgabat for souvenirs and last sightseeing. You may visit the main post office for postcards and explore the Tolkuchka (Altyn Asyr) Bazaar, one of Central Asia's largest open-air markets, ideal for carpets, textiles, hats, jewelry and handmade gifts. After lunch you can visit a modern mall such as the Berkarar Center or take a scenic walk along part of the Health Path (Saglyk Yoly) in the Kopet Dag foothills. Around 16:00 we transfer you to Ashgabat International Airport, where your 3-day journey ends as you say goodbye to your guide and driver.
