3-Day Turkmenistan Tour: Shavat, Darvaza & Ashgabat
This three-day tour blends desert adventure with cultural discovery. Starting at the Shavat border with lunch in Dashoguz, you head south to the blazing Darvaza Gas Crater for sunset, a kebab dinner, and a night in traditional yurts. The next day you travel to Ashgabat, stopping at the water and mud craters along the way, before exploring the white-marble capital. The journey ends with an overnight train back to Dashoguz and a transfer to the Shavat border.
DAY BY DAY
Day 1 — Shavat – Dashoguz – Darvaza
Meet at the Shavat border crossing with Uzbekistan, near Khiva and Urgench, and have lunch in Dashoguz. Then drive about 300 km (around 7 hours) to Darvaza and arrive at the famous Darvaza Gas Crater. Enjoy dinner at a nearby yurt camp and spend the night in yurts or tents beside the burning crater.
Day 2 — Darvaza – Ashgabat
After breakfast at Darvaza, drive about 300 km (around 5 hours) toward Ashgabat, stopping at the water crater and the mud crater along the way. Have lunch at a restaurant in the capital and enjoy a city tour of Ashgabat, the white-marble city. In the evening, board a night train to Dashoguz.
Day 3 — Dashoguz – Shavat
Arrive in Dashoguz in the morning and transfer to the Shavat border. The tour ends at the Shavat border crossing.
