2-Day Turkmenistan Tour: Ashgabat & Darvaza Gas Crater
This two-day tour is the perfect short escape to take in Turkmenistan's highlights when time is limited. Begin in Ashgabat with free time before crossing the Karakum desert to the fiery Darvaza Gas Crater. Watch the flames blaze at sunset, enjoy dinner, and spend the night in a traditional yurt camp. The next morning you return to Ashgabat for a guided city tour of its museums and monuments.
DAY BY DAY
Day 1 — Bajgiran Border (Iran) – Ashgabat – Darvaza
We meet you at the Bajgiran border crossing with Iran and, after completing border formalities, transfer about 45 km (roughly one hour) to Ashgabat with free time in the marble capital until the afternoon. You then depart north for Darvaza (271 km, about 4.5 hours on a rough desert road), arriving at the Darvaza Gas Crater before sunset. Enjoy dinner at the yurt camp near the crater and time to explore the burning 'Gates of Hell' with your guide. Overnight at Darvaza in yurts or tents.
Day 2 — Darvaza – Dashoguz – Shavat Border (Khiva)
After breakfast at Darvaza, you drive north across the Karakum Desert to Dashoguz (about 250 km), with a lunch stop and a short look at the city. In the afternoon you continue to the Shavat border crossing (about 80 km) for exit formalities into Uzbekistan, where the historic city of Khiva lies just beyond the frontier. End of services at the Shavat border.
