4 Day Turkmenistan Complete Tour (from Khiva)
A complete four-day journey across Turkmenistan, starting and ending at the country's borders for travelers coming from Uzbekistan via Khiva. You will witness the famous Darvaza Gas Crater ("Gates of Hell") with an overnight stay in a desert yurt camp, explore the futuristic white-marble capital Ashgabat, and walk through the ancient Silk Road city of Merv. The tour combines desert adventure, modern cities and centuries of history in one efficient itinerary, with an English-speaking guide throughout.
DAY BY DAY
Day 1 — Shavat – Dashoguz – Kunya-Urgench – Darvaza
Meet your guide at the Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan border (Shavat), near Khiva and Urgench, and complete the entry formalities. Drive to Kunya-Urgench, then continue across the Karakum Desert to Darvaza. In the evening you arrive at the Darvaza Gas Crater, the famous "Gates of Hell." Enjoy dinner at a yurt camp and spend the night in a yurt or tent beside the burning crater.
Day 2 — Darvaza – Ashgabat
After breakfast at Darvaza, drive about 300 km (around 5 hours) to Ashgabat. Along the way you stop to see the Water Crater and the Mud Crater. Have lunch at a restaurant in Ashgabat, check into your hotel, and set off on an Ashgabat city tour through the white-marble capital. Dinner at a traditional restaurant and overnight in Ashgabat.
Day 3 — Ashgabat – Merv (Mary)
After breakfast at the hotel, drive about 400 km (around 4 hours) to Merv, with lunch at a restaurant near the city. Explore the ancient Silk Road city of Merv, including Gyz-Gala, the Askhabi mausoleum, the ancient fortresses of Gyaur-Kala and Erk-Kala, and the Sultan Sanjar mausoleum. After dinner at a restaurant in Mary, board the overnight train from Merv to Turkmenabat.
Day 4 — Merv – Turkmenabat – Farab Border
Arrive in Turkmenabat in the morning. Drive about 40 km (a 30-minute ride) to the Farab border crossing, where the tour ends as you cross the border out of Turkmenistan.
