Overview

This three-day tour of Turkmenistan is ideal for travelers crossing from Bukhara through the Farab border. Begin at Turkmenabat, once known as the country's second capital in Soviet times, then continue to the UNESCO-listed ruins of ancient Merv, including Gyaur Kala, Erk Kala and the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar. Spend a full day in Ashgabat, the white-marble capital, exploring its monuments, museums and lively bazaars. On the final day you return via Turkmenabat and cross back into Uzbekistan at the Farab border.

DAY BY DAY

01

Day 1Farab Border → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat

Meet your guide at the Farab border crossing near Turkmenabat and complete the formalities. Drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site of ancient Merv for an introductory visit of its famous monuments. After exploring Merv you continue to Ashgabat along an excellent toll highway. Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 2Ashgabat City Tour

Spend a full day exploring the marble monuments and attractions of Ashgabat. Visit the Independence Monument, the Neutrality Arch and other highlights of this unique white-marble city. There is also free time to discover more of the capital at your own pace. Overnight in Ashgabat.

03

Day 3Ashgabat → Turkmenabat → Bukhara

Continue the city tour in the morning if you wish. In the afternoon you take a domestic flight to Turkmenabat. On arrival you transfer to the Farab border crossing and exit back into Uzbekistan, where the tour ends.
