Balkanabat is the administrative center of Balkan Province in western Turkmenistan, lying about 450 km west of Ashgabat and 160 km east of the Caspian port of Turkmenbashy. Founded in 1933 as Neftedag ("Oil Mountain") and granted city status in 1946 as Nebit-Dag, it was renamed Balkanabat in 2001 after the nearby Balkan mountains. The city sits in a cold desert climate with hot summers and mild winters. It is above all an industrial center for petroleum and natural gas production, with a branch of the Russian company Tatneft operating locally, complemented by animal husbandry and the growing of wheat and cotton. The provincial mosque, with four 63-meter minarets, accommodates 3,000 worshippers. Visitor highlights include the "Pioneers" monument honoring desert oil explorers and geologist Ivan Gubkin, the yurt-shaped cultural complex Turkmenin ak oyi ("Turkmen White House," completed 2021), the Saparmyrat Turkmenbashy Park, and the Health Path hiking circuit opened in 2004. The city is served by Balkanabat Airport, a station on the Trans-Caspian Railway, and the M37 highway.
