Awaza is a national tourist zone and a borough of Turkmenbashy, set on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea about 12 km west of the city in Balkan Province. Developed from a small village starting in 2007, it has become one of the largest resort destinations along the Caspian coast, promoted by the state as a Turkmen answer to Dubai and Las Vegas. The resort offers long sandy beaches, clear sea water and a hot, dry summer climate ideal for seaside holidays. Its infrastructure includes 18 hotels, wellness centres, cottage complexes and capacity for more than 10,000 guests at once, along with daily flights and a motorway link to Turkmenbashy International Airport. Key attractions include a 30-hectare aquapark, the Awaza Fountain Complex with 24-metre jets and holographic displays, the 7-kilometre Awaza River with boat tours and waterside restaurants, the Avaza Sanatorium offering balneotherapy and thalassotherapy, and several landscaped parks with rides and amphitheatres.
